In ‘Countrymen,’ we follow a group of men from the east of Oslo who moved to a farm in picturesque Telemark. They pretend to be driven by a mutual interest in agriculture, but instead, they have something different planned. Life in the countryside seems very different from what they expect. Curious neighbours, a herd of goats, and an establishment grant from the municipality sabotage their plans. One thing leads to another, and before they know it, the men from Oslo become entrepreneurs, founding Norway’s first Halal cheese factory.
‘Countrymen’ is a story of community and belonging, and about discovering purpose where it is least expected. The series won the award for Best Comedy at the BANFF World Media Festival, as well as the High School Prize and Best Ensemble Cast at CannesSeries. Creators Anne Bjørnstad and Izer Aliu were nominated for Outstanding Writing at the Gothenburg Film Festival
